Geography:

Sikkim is a small beautiful state of India in the Eastern Himalayas with steep mountains and deep valleys. It is wedged between Nepal in the west and Bhutan in the east and China in the north and northeast. In the south it shares its Indian border with the state of West Bengal. Sikkim, is oblong in shape with a north to south length of approximately 100 km., and an east to west breadth of approximately 60 km. that gives it a total land mass of 7096 square kilometers.

This gigantic horseshoe enclosure causes the trapping of moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal and results in high precipitation round the year. Sikkim is one amongst the few states that receive regular snowfall. The snowline of Sikkim is approx.6,000 meters.

History And Culture:

Sikkim was inhabited in pre-historic times by three tribes namely Naong, Chang and the Mon. The Lepcha who entered Sikkim sometimes later absorbed them completely. The origin of Lepchas is shrouded in mistery but it seems that they belonged to the clan of the Nagas of the Mikir, Garo and Khasia hills which lie to the south of the Bramaputra valley. Some believe they came from somewhere the borders of Tibet and Burma .According to their own tradition they came to Sikkim from the east in company with Jindaxs who went to Nepal and shared their tradition.
